Xfinity Series practice report from Atlanta

Justin Haley was fastest in the Xfinity Series’ second and final practice session Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Haley posted a top speed of 177.783 mph around the track.

The rookie for Kaulig Racing was followed by rookie Noah Gragson (177.584 mph), Cole Custer (176.448), Ryan Preece (176.162) and Tyler Reddick (176.011).

John Hunter Nemechek recorded the most laps with 55.

Gragson had the best 10-lap average at 172.715 mph.

First practice

Custer was fastest in the first Friday practice session with a top speed of 178.218 mph around the 1.54-mile track.

The top five was completed by Christopher Bell (176.989 mph), Justin Haley (176.555), Justin Allgaier (176.157) and Jeffrey Earnhardt (176.045).

Michael Annett had the best 10-lap average at 171.719 mph.

There were no incidents in the session.

The final Xfinity practice session set for 3:05 – 3:55 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Clint Bowyer fastest in first Cup practice at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Clint Bowyer was fastest in Friday’s only Cup Series practice session at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Bowyer and his No. 14 Ford posted a top speed of 180.152 mph around the 1.54-mile track during the 80-minute session.

The top five was completed by Aric Almirola (179.988 mph), Austin Dillon (179.772), Kurt Busch (179.406) and Denny Hamlin (178.931).

Hamlin recorded the most laps in the session with 27.

There were no incidents in the session.

The session was the first chance for many teams to experience the 2019 rules package.

The fastest lap in Cup practice at Atlanta last year was 29.745 seconds. Bowyer posted the fastest lap in today’s session at 30.774 seconds.

The 20th fastest lap was Michael McDowell at 31.181 seconds, meaning there was four-tenths of a second difference from 1st to 20th. Last year, the gap from 1st to 20th in the opening practice was half a second.

“I feel a high rate of speed and sensation through the corners like I normally would here but you get there a little slower and exit the corner a little slower,” said David Ragan, who was 22nd on the speed chart. “I think handling will still be important. The guys that can get over the bumps and manage their tires and have a good handling car are going to be able to get through the most important part of the race track which are the middle of the corners on both ends.

“They will get through easier, better and more efficient than the other guys. You can tell down the straightaway that you don’t quite have that extra horsepower pulling you down the straightaway but once you get into the corner you better hold onto the steering wheel because your car still bounces around and is still loose and still tight.”

Cup qualifying is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson top second Cup Series practice in Las Vegas

Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson were fastest in the second of three NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Elliott had a healthy advantage over Larson with a top speed of 191.580 mph. Larson maxed out at 188.818 mph.

The top five was completed by Matt Kenseth (188.594), Kyle Busch (188.515). and Kasey Kahne (188.068)

Martin Truex Jr., who was fastest in Friday’s practice, was 18th fastest at 186.690 mph.

Elliott also had the top 10-lap average at 186.480 mph.

Kyle Busch tops first Xfinity practice at Dover

Kyle Busch led the first Xfinity Series practice at Dover International Speedway with a top speed of 157.729 mph. Busch was the only driver to top 156 mph.

Filling out the top five for the practice session for the Drive Sober 200 was Erik Jones (155.615), Alex Bowman (155.340), Austin Dillon (155.313) and Joey Logano (153.840).

Busch and Brandon Jones recorded the most laps in the session with 26. Busch (153.291) and Justin Marks (144.801) were the only drivers to record 10 consecutive laps.

The Xfinity Series will have one more practice session today.

Ben Rhodes leads first Truck practice at New Hampshire

In the last minutes of the Camping World Truck Series’ first practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Ben Rhodes dethroned William Byron from the top spot with a speed of 132.076 mph.

Byron, who was in the top two for most of the session, finished at 131.811 mph. Byron also had the best 10-lap average at 129.776 mph.

Rounding out the top five was Christopher Bell, Johnny Sauter and Ben Kennedy.

Spencer Gallagher recorded the most laps in the session with 29.
