Wood Brothers Racing wins first quarter NMPA Pocono Spirit Award

Wood Brothers Racing has won the first quarter National Motorsports Press Association Pocono Spirit Award for charitable work in helping seniors in and around its home base of Stuart, Virginia.

The organization spearheaded a campaign to provide COVID-19 quarantined seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities — including Landmark Center and the Blue Ridge Therapy Center in Stuart, and 10 other facilities in the region — with electronic tablets to allow residents to communicate with family members.

Starting with $1,500 in seed funding, Wood Brothers Racing began a crowdfunding effort that raised $33,000 from contributions of $10 or more. That funding paid for 220 tablets for residents in those 12 facilities. More than 1,100 individuals contributed to the fundraising effort.

“We were shocked at the response we got,” Wood Brothers Racing senior vice president Jon Wood said in a statement. “I think everyone has some connection with a senior and many of those are in facilities that are affected.

“What we didn’t anticipate was the huge number of people wanting to contribute, and it just shows that we aren’t all that divided in a time of crisis.

“It was extremely gratifying to hear the stories since, how this helped ease some of the anxiety and stress from both the residents and the families. These people did nothing wrong. They managed to do something right in fact, that being to live to an age where they needed help, and so it seemed unfair for them to be cut off from the very people that give them comfort.

“Unfair because they were being protected from something many of them didn’t understand or weren’t able to fully grasp and the way they were going about being protected only added to their fears and frustrations. This just helped alleviate some of that, so in every way I can think of, it was a total success.”

Others receiving votes were:

* The Joey Logano Foundation, which teamed with Bobbee O’s BBQ and Elevation Church to provide free meals to children under 18 years old over a two-week period.

* Steve Myers, executive vice president and executive producer of iRacing, for spearheading an effort to bring virtual racing competition to a national audience during the pandemic.

* General Motors, which ramped up its assembly lines to produce personal protective gear for front-line workers and ventilators for patients in critical need during the pandemic.

The Pocono Spirit Award is voted upon by NMPA membership.

Aric Almirola, Joey Logano supporting charities in Darlington return

NASCAR’s return today at Darlington Raceway (3:30 p.m. ET on Fox) will see the teams of Aric Almirola and Joey Logano using the opportunity to highlight charitable efforts aimed at helping communities during the COVID- 19 pandemic.

The paint scheme of Almirola’s No. 10 Ford will have “#GoodFoodChallenge” on its quarter panels.

Almirola’s sponsor, Smithfield Foods, has develop a way to help families in need through the support of Feeding America with protein donations. On March 26, Smithfield launched the Good Food Challenge with the goal of providing more than 10 million meals. A few weeks later, Smithfield committed to donating more than 40 million servings of protein to Feeding America.

“All you have to do is open your phone and use the hashtag #GoodFoodChallenge between May 12 and May 21,” Almirola said in a media release. “Every time someone uses this hashtag, they instantly provide 10 servings of protein to Feeding America. That’s hard to pass up on.

“We’re obviously extremely excited to get back to racing and compete for a championship, but it’s even more exciting to have the opportunity to help those in need in these tough times by typing three words on your phone and clicking send. I’m blessed to be partnered with a company who, in these times, uses our partnership to give back.”

Logano’s No. 22 Ford will be sponsored by Shell in the Sunday and Wednesday races at Darlington. On the scheme will be a logo for Feeding America. To date, Shell has contributed more than $2 million to support COVID-19 relief efforts across the country.

Shell is also providing 2.5 million meals to help fight hunger in communities in need via Feeding America. Fans can go to fuelrewards.com/moreforgood to donate directly. $1 helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks.

On Monday, the Joey Logano Foundation, the NASCAR Foundation, and Elevation Outreach, an outreach ministry of Elevation Church based in Charlotte, North Carolina, are partnering with Convoy of Hope to bring a tractor trailer with 40,000 pounds of food and supplies to approximately 1,000 households / vehicles during its drive-thru distribution at Darlington Raceway. The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. ET.

Also, Richard Childress Racing continues to hold an auction of items from Childress’ personal collection that benefits COVID-19 relief efforts.

 

Joey Logano Foundation establishes $1 million COVID-19 fund

The Joey Logano Foundation has established a $1 million COVID-19 response and recovery fund in partnership with Elevation Church, the foundation announced Tuesday.

The funding will address a variety of needs, including educational equity and access, medical supplies, food distribution and financial shortages throughout the greater Charlotte, North Carolina area and communities across the United States. Elevation Church is based in the Charlotte suburb of Matthews, North Carolina, and has locations in Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and Canada.

“I’ve been blessed to have the ability to help others with our platform and for the past few weeks, the Joey Logano Foundation has been able to help in multiple ways on a local level,” Logano said in a statement. “However, (wife) Brittany and I knew we could do more and felt a huge calling to give on a larger capacity at a statewide and national level.

“Partnering up with Elevation Outreach couldn’t have been a better fit. At a blistering pace, Elevation Outreach and the Joey Logano Foundation have been able to create a $1,000,000 COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, which will help provide funding and necessary supplies for organizations in need during this scary time. Part of JLF’s mission is to inspire others to live a life of generosity and our hope is that this Response and Recovery fund is a catalyst for others to be inspired to give back during this pandemic.”

NASCAR America: Joey Logano is a champion on and off the track

Before he won the 2018 Cup championship, Joey Logano received perhaps his most meaningful honor of the season when he became the Comcast Community Champion of the Year for his charitable foundation. It underscored the type of champion that he hoped to become.

“At 28 years old, (Logano) has an enormous amount of perspective,” Nate Ryan said on Tuesday’s edition of NASCAR America. “The night before he won his first Cup championship, he went to a supermarket near the track in Homestead and helped out 100 needy families with gift cards through his foundation.

“He took the time out to do that on the eve of the most important race of his career.”

That trip to the supermarket was still on his mind after winning the Cup – not having been erased by an accomplishment that would overshadow almost every positive and negative occasion from the past year.

“I think what Joey Logano brings that is so difficult as an athlete is he has two personalities,” Jeff Burton said. “He has a personality when you put your helmet on: you have to be selfish, you have to be arrogant, you have to egotistical. You have to be all the things your Mom told you not to be. When you take that helmet off, you have to be this.

“When you see him and his wife Brittany and you see them at those events, you can look in their eyes. They’re not doing it because there’s a camera there; they are doing it because they want to do it.”
