Kyle Busch had to battle back from a refueling problem on his last pit stop to finish third at Watkins Glen International.
Busch stretched his lead in the points to 70 over 10th-place finisher Kevin Harvick.
Truex ran out of gas on the final lap, but managed to finish second to Chase Elliott and retain third in the points.
Clint Bowyer took advantage of the early elimination of Joey Logano for a broken radiator to climb to fifth in the standings.
Elliott’s victory at Watkins Glen locked him into the playoffs. He also scored a stage win and currently has eight playoff points.
