Jamie McMurray posted the fastest single lap in final practice for the Geico 500 at Talladega with a speed of 203.975 mph - and then he flipped six times after blowing a left rear tire.
McMurray will have to roll out a backup car.
“As a race car driver, those are the worst positions you can get put in,” McMurray said on FS1 after leaving the infield care center. “When you cut a right front tire and see the wall coming, you know what those impacts are going to be; you know how to brace yourself.
“When you’re tumbling, you can’t tell where the impact is going to come from. You also don’t know, when it stops are there going to be more cars coming.”
In fact, the three fastest cars in this practice session sustained damage in this incident.
Ty Dillon (203.610 mph) and Daniel Suarez posted the second and third fastest laps respectively. They will be in back up cars to start Sunday’s race as well.
Fifth fastest Ryan Newman was the fourth driver involved in the accident and he also destroyed his primary car.
McMurray, Dillon, Suarez and Newman will each drop to the back of the field.
Rounding out the top five in final practice were Erik Jones (202.830 mph) and Martin Truex, Jr. (202.770).
Kevin Harvick (195.065) and Joey Logano (194.420) were the only two drivers who ran 10 or more consecutive laps.
