Things heat up at Phoenix even more with two fires after wreck

Chris Buescher sustains heavy damage and signals what could be a pivotal caution with 61 laps to go in the Can-Am 500.

As if the pressure to become the last driver to reach next week’s championship race at Miami wasn’t enough, things really heated up on Lap 253 of the scheduled 312-lap Can-Am 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Chris Buescher was involved in a one-car wreck that resulted in a hard hit and parts of red-hot brake rotors flying between the outside retaining wall and SAFER Barrier.

Those brake rotors resulted in two separate fires that brought the race to a red-flag stoppage as the fires were extinguished, as well as other debris was cleaned up. The red flag lasted five minutes, three seconds.

Matt Kenseth is leading the race with just under 60 laps to go.

We’ll have video of Buescher’s wreck and the fires shortly. Please check back soon.
