Kevin Harvick finished third at Chicagoland, right where he says he should have, and says the focus of the day was not making mistakes.

Kevin Harvick opened the NASCAR Cup playoffs with his best finish in six races.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver placed third for his first top five since he finished second at Pocono in July.

Harvick led 59 laps on the way to his ninth top five of the season.

“Our focus was just to make sure we didn’t make any mistakes today,” Harvick told NBCSN. “We knew not making mistakes was going a long way. You saw, even the 78 (Martin Truex Jr.) made mistakes today and they had a fast enough car to recover from that. (The) 18 (Kyle Busch) didn’t recover from his mistakes.”

The top five is Harvick’s ninth at Chicagoland Speedway, which leads all drivers.

“I felt like the 24 (Chase Elliott) and the 78 were a little bit better than us and we finished right where we should’ve,” Harvick said.
