NASCAR America: Pocono Raceway now hardest track on brakes

Drivers will have to be careful on the “Tricky Triangle” as there were multiple brake failures during the June race.

Last June, brakes became the talk of NASCAR after a race that saw two separate crashes at Pocono Raceway on the same lap in the same turn.

Jimmie Johnson and Jamie McMurray each lost their brakes and crashed into the outside wall as they entered Turn 1 at the end of Stage 1.

NASCAR America’s analysts discussed how important brakes have become at the 2.5-mile triangle track.

“I’m sure drivers have gone to their crew chiefs and said ‘I want a better brake package than I had’ because they don’t need to be dealing with that,” Dale Jarrett said. “At the end of the longest straightaway we have in the sport, you’re carrying way too much speed to be thinking about issues with your brakes.”

Marty Snider said a brake specialist for a team told him “Pocono is now the No. 1 brake problem track and it’s overtaken Martinsville.”
