Car that Dale Earnhardt raced in 1990 sells big at Barrett-Jackson auction

Earnhardt 1990 car

If you were ever hoping to own a car Dale Earnhardt won with at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1989 or 1990, you’re now out of luck.

A Chevrolet Lumina Earnhardt drove 27 years ago sold for $200,000 last Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector-Car Auction.

The car was authenticated by documentation from crew chief Kirk Shelmerdine as being one Earnhardt drove in 1989 and 1990 and won with at Atlanta. Shelmerdine was crew chief for Richard Childress Racing’s No. 3 team from 1984-1992.

Earnhardt won the fall 1989 and the spring 1990 events at Atlanta. The spring race at Atlanta was the first of nine Earnhardt won in the 1990 season. It was also his sixth of nine Cup wins at Atlanta.

The car’s winning ways have continued off the track.

The auction listing says the car won at the Lake Mirror Classic in Lakeland, Florida, for best Historic Race Car and was with its previous owner for seven years.
