Joey Logano takes Cup pole at Phoenix, Ryan Blaney also on front row

Joey Logano has a tendency of picking up where he left off – and he did it again Friday.

Logano won last season’s NASCAR Cup playoff race at Phoenix, his first career Cup victory at the one-mile oval.

He returned to Phoenix Raceway on Friday and began his quest for a second straight win there in the best way possible, earning the pole for Sunday’s Camping World 500.

“It’s nice, it’s a good momentum builder for us,” Logano told Fox Sports 1. “This has always been a good track for us. We were finally able to break through and win here last fall.

“I feel like we had a real good car in race trim today. Our car was fast. We just have to stick to our guns and do what we know how to do, tune our car in a little better for tomorrow’s practices and execute in the race.”

Although it was the 18th pole of Logano’s Cup career, it was yet another first for him at Phoenix. Even though he has sat on the outside of the front row in two of his 16 previous Cup starts there, Friday was his first Cup pole there.

It was also his first pole of 2017 after starting from the front three times last season.

“I didn’t think it was going to be quite good enough but I pushed as hard as I could,” said Logano, who shares the front row with a fellow Ford driver, Ryan Blaney. “Sometimes you overdrive it a little bit and you still can make speed.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Larson qualified third and fourth, followed by Jamie McMurray, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth.
