JTG Daugherty will appeal a penalty for unsecured lug nuts issued after the Atlanta race earlier this month. The National Motorsports Appeals Panel is scheduled to hear the appeal March 22.
NASCAR docked the team and driver AJ Allmendinger 35 points each, fined crew chief Randall Burnett $65,000 and suspended Burnett three races for having at least three unsecured lug nuts at the end of the race. Burnett will continue to serve his suspension – he was not at Las Vegas last weekend and will not be at Phoenix this weekend. The team is appealing the point penalty and the fine.
The point penalty dropped Allmendinger from 11th to 35th in the points at the time. He enters this weekend’s race at Phoenix 34th in the driver standings.
The Cup Rule Book states that when a matter is brought to the National Motorsports Appeals Panel that the burden rests with NASCAR to show that “more likely than not that a violation of the NASCAR Rule Book … has occurred.”
Should the panel’s decision go against the team, then the team can appeal to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer.
