Carl Edwards' championship hopes come to an end when he gets into a wreck while trying to block Joey Logano at Homestead.

Carl Edwards wrecked out of the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in a large crash during a restart with 10 laps to go in the Sprint Cup season finale.

Edwards, a Chase driver, was attempting to block fellow Chaser Joey Logano as the field neared Turn 1 when Edwards was turned and slammed nose-first into the inside wall.

Edwards then shot up the track and was rammed by Kasey Kahne as cars began piling into them. The collision with Kahne sent Edwards’ car momentarily airborne before landing on all four tires.

“I think (the blame) was shared, I think it was just racing,” Edwards told NBC Sports. “First of all, that was the race of my life up until that point. That was a lot of fun. Joey was so good on the short run. I don’t know how he got that restart, it was a really good restart. I thought everything was going to work out ... I just pushed the issue because I figured that was the race there. Joey just timed it perfectly, I could feel him a little. I thought I would clear him or force him to lift. I thought I would just a have a bit more time.”

After climbing out of the No. 19, Edwards walked all the way to the No. 22 pit stall to wish the team good luck with the rest of the race.

Also involved in the wreck were Ryan Newman, Regan Smith, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr, Chase Elliott and Ty Dillon.

Truex had to quickly escape the No. 78 as it was engulfed in flames.

The accident caused the race to be red flagged for 31 minutes and nine seconds.
