Chase Elliott was leading at Chicagoland Speedway when a caution came out with five laps to go and took away his shot at his first career win.
Elliott gave up the lead to come down pit road for tires but was beaten out by Martin Truex Jr. He then lined up fifth on the restart behind Truex and three drivers who had elected to stay out. Elliott finished third after leading 75 laps.
“Expect it, nothing is yours until it’s over,” Elliott told NBCSN. “That’s a part of life, man. You’re not dumb, we’ve all watched this stuff long enough we know these races don’t go green that long and we see more cautions come out at the end of these races than we do not.”
