NASCAR America: How could a possible penalty impact Ryan Newman’s Chase hopes?

The NASCAR America crew examined Ryan Newman‘s Chase hopes heading into Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway – the final race before the 16-driver playoff field is set.

Newman is seven points behind Jamie McMurray for what would be the final transfer spot, but Newman’s car failed the Laser Inspection Station after Sunday night’s Southern 500. Any penalties are expected to be announced later this week. Newman could lose points for the infraction.

“At seven points outside the Chase, that’s feasible, that’s just racing a race and going out there and having a good run and putting it in the top 10, you can think feasibly you can point your way into the Chase,” said NBC Sports analyst Parker Kligerman. “Now, say he’s 17 points out (with a penalty), now he’s having to hope that something happens to Jamie McMurray or something happens to Chris Buescher in terms of whether Chris Buescher doesn’t stay in the top 30 in points. He’s not able to control his own destiny on this 31 team. That’s an issue when you go into a race like this when there’s already so much pressure and so much you’re working on.”
