The cars of Kyle Larson and Ryan Newman each failed post-race inspection at Darlington Raceway and any penalty could hurt Newman’s chances of making the Chase.
Both cars failed the Laser Inspection Station. Any penalties will be announced this week.
A penalty to Larson, who finished third, would be insignificant since he’s locked into the Chase, but Newman is fighting for a Chase berth and is seven points out of the final transfer spot heading to Richmond International Raceway this weekend. The Richard Childress Racing driver lost 10 points earlier this year after Atlanta when he and his teammates were penalized after NASCAR confiscated the braces in the right-rear corners of their cars.
Newman’s car, which finished eighth Sunday, was chosen as the random for post-race inspection.
The No. 31 as well as the cars of race-winner Martin Truex Jr. and second-place Kevin Harvick will be inspected further at the NASCAR R&D Center.
Truex and Harvick’s cars both passed at-track inspection.
