For the second consecutive year, Hall of Fame broadcaster Ken Squier will call part of Sunday’s Southern 500 (6 p.m., NBC) as part of Darlington Raceway’s throwback weekend.

Though Squier relishes the passel of paint-scheme tributes to NASCAR lore, the theme can be daunting in accurately describing the race.

“The scary part was because of the cars being redefined to a time period in the past and then remembering the present, I was somewhat concerned about that and still am,” Squier said on the latest edition of the NASCAR on NBC podcast. “You see a car like the Holman-Moody No. 17, sure looked like (David) Pearson, and it’s some kid named Ricky Stenhouse, and you’re groping trying to come up with it. That made it challenging, a little different than what I thought it was going to be. But I enjoyed so much doing it, and I guess it came out pretty well.”

The throwback announcing booth of Squier with analysts Ned Jarrett and Dale Jarrett drew rave reviews as the trio seamlessly meshed with hardly any practice.

“Actually, it felt pretty natural,” said Squier, who had announced races with Ned Jarrett in the past. “That was really very, very special.”

During the podcast, Squier also discussed his affinity for Darlington, his literary style (including some favorite authors) and why Labor Day meant so much to the Southern 500.
