Martin Truex Jr. was fastest in the first practice session at Michigan International Speedway on Friday afternoon with a lap of 201.545 mph.
Truex was joined in the 201 mph club by Jimmie Johnson, who was second fastest with a lap of 201.134 mph. Joey Logano (200.966 mph), Rayn Blaney (200.775 mph), and Kyle Larson (200.730 mph) rounded out the top five.
Logano is the most recent Michigan winner.
There was one incident in the 1 hour, 25-minute session. Rookie Jeffrey Earnhardt will go to a backup car after damaging the right side of his No. 32 when he made hard contact with the wall in Turn 2. Earnhardt was 38th in the session at 190.340 mph.
