The NASCAR America crew discussed last weekend’s racing at Bristol Motor Speedway and the impact of the track adding a substance to the race surface to increase grip.
Former champions Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick said during the weekend that NASCAR should look at similar type of surface enhancements at other tracks. Harvick said similar work should be done to Dover, a concrete track as Bristol is, and Martinsville, which has concrete in the corners. He also said options should be examined for asphalt tracks.
NASCAR on NBC analyst Jeff Burton said such talk will lead to what he calls “the great debate.’'
“The great thing this will cause is the great debate about what is good racing because I’ve heard five or six people say Martinsville and that’s the first thing that came to my mind. But do you really want multiple grooves (there) because we gave the fans multiple grooves at Bristol and they didn’t like it.
“What’s good racing? That’s always in the eye of the beholder, but there is no doubt that the racing this weekend at Bristol was fun to watch. I haven’t talked to a single driver who didn’t enjoy it, have a good time. There is something to be learned here and be applied at the right race tracks. Again, there will be this great debate of ‘Do we need it here? Do we need it there?’ There will be a lot of different opinions.’'
