Jimmie Johnson will pay tribute to David Pearson with his throwback paint scheme for the September 4 race at Darlington Raceway.

Crew chief Chad Knaus unveiled the No. 48 Lowe’s car Wednesday morning at the Hendrick Motorsports shop during a Facebook Live session. Knaus explained Pearson finished second in the car, owned by Rod Osterland, at Talladega Superspeedway in 1979. Pearson drove the No. 2 in place of injured rookie Dale Earnhardt.

Lowe’s was the sponsor on the car that day. Pearson would go on to also replace Earnhardt in races at Michigan, Bristol, and Darlington.

“We all know how great David Pearson was at Darlington, how many races he had won there, so we thought that this would be an amazing tie-in back to Darlington vintage style racing,” Knaus said.

Johnson is a three-time winner at Darlington and the second driver to honor Pearson with his throwback paint scheme.

In 47 starts at Darlington, Pearson won 10 times and collected 30 top-10 finishes. His average finish was 12.0 and he led a total of 2,116 laps.
