Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Austin Dillon and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. were involved in a wreck on Lap 53 of Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International.
“I was trying to get to the left side of the 23 (David Ragan) going into Turn 6, tried to carry my momentum in there, and then the car kind of bounced and got loose,” Stenhouse said on USA Network. “It was really fast today, most competitive I’ve been on a road course. I came across the track, spinning, it was hard to see, cars moving everywhere and Jimmie had nowhere to go, and the 16 (Biffle) and 3 (Dillon), as well.”
Johnson, who now has four DNFs in his last nine starts, gave this perspective:
“Cars started checking up in front of me, they all moved out of the way and the 17 was sitting there, stopped,” Johnson said. “I’m so thankful it was the passenger side door and not the driver’s side door because I plowed him, I really hit the car hard. I was afraid I might have injured him, but thankfully he’s okay.”
