Appreciate all their work and their support and everybody doing a really good job for us. Just being able to sit on the pole here at Indy is something I’ve wanted to do, and I’ve never been able to do it. I haven’t been great at qualifying here, but (crew chief) Adam Stevens and the guys gave me a great piece this time around.”

Denny Hamlin (184.079 mph) and Brad Keselowski (183.591) completed the top five.

Five-time Indianapolis winner Jeff Gordon, who is driving the No. 88 for Dale Earnhardt Jr., will start 21st.
