Feature reporter Rutledge Wood joins the latest episode of the NASCAR on NBC podcast to discuss the unconventional approach to his job – and his unconventional style in being off-beat.
“I’ve always been a little different,” Wood said. “My parents were always really good about reminding me, ‘That’s OK. You don’t maybe dress and look like everyone else.’
“But I tell you what, with certain places in NASCAR, I’d walk in, and the record would stop. ‘Who’s the dude with the bad Mohawk and the beard?’ ”
Wood actually is well suited for covering racing as an automobile enthusiast who has owned dozens of cars (including one from Richard Petty). He discusses how he became a gearhead, his path into being a TV personality in motorsports and some of his favorite recent work (including a tour of the ISC Archives in Daytona and upcoming programs with Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer).
