Harrison Burton earns top-three finish in ARCA debut

Harrison Burton had a “whole lot of fun” in his ARCA Racing Series debut.

The 15-year-old driver and son of NBC Sports analyst and former Sprint Cup driver Jeff Burton used that phrase three times in his postrace interview with FS1 after placing third in the ABC Supply 150 at Iowa Speedway.

“I can’t really put it any other way,” Harrison Burton said after he started sixth and then placed his No. 8 Chevrolet for Ranier Racing with MDM in the top three.

Burton, a member of the current NASCAR Next class, finished ahead of former members Cole Custer and Dalton Sargeant. The only two drivers to best him were teammate Kyle Benjamin and race winner Chase Briscoe.

“I can’t tell you how much I learned,” said Burton, who competes full time in the K&N Pro Series East with HScott Motorsports. “I learned a whole lot about pit road, I learned a whole lot about this race track and how the top comes in pretty good there ... It was a blast to run out there.”

Burton finished behind Benjamin, another former NASCAR Next member, who started from the pole and led the first 41 laps of the race at the Iowa short track.

“We started off a little bit too loose there in the race,” Burton said. “We worked on our way to get tighter and tighter and as we made that last change on pit road that thing came alive and we started running them down big time. It was a whole lot of fun to race (Dalton Sargeant) and try to run down my teammate Kyle Benjamin, but man, this thing was fast at the end of the race.

“Had there been 50 more laps, I think we might be where the winner is tonight.”

Burton will race next in the K&N East Series’ United Site Services 70 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 15.
