This weekend’s action at Kentucky Speedway is the first race weekend at the 1.5-mile track since it was repaved and reconfigured in Turns 1 and 2 from 14 to 17 degree banking.

As a result of a two-day tire test on June 13-14 the Sprint Cup Series will be running a different right-side tire than the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series. All three series will use the same left-side tire.

Sprint Cup Tire Info

Tire Codes: Left-side — D-4688; Right-side — D-4712

Tire Circumference: Left-side — 87.56 in. (2,224 mm); Right-side — 88.50 in. (2,248 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation: Left Front — 25 psi; Left Rear — 25 psi; Right Front — 54 psi; Right Rear — 50 psi

Sprint Cup teams used this left-side tire code  earlier this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This is the first time running this right-side tire, which features the same construction as the right-side tire used at Michigan International Speedway. It is a single compound tire with the same compound that was run on the inboard two inches of Michigan’s multi-zone tread right-side.

During the June tire test, enough blistering was discovered on tires that Goodyear’s Greg Stucker, director of race tire sales, said “we needed to react.’’

After a practice crash at Daytona last weekend, Kyle Busch expressed frustration with the tires Goodyear has provided this year, saying all four of his tires blistered after 23 laps at Kentucky during the test.

“We’ve seen it at Charlotte, we’ve seen it at Michigan, we’ve seen it at Las Vegas,” Busch said. “We’ve been there and done that. That’s why all of us drivers are so adamant to not repave these facilities for as long as we possibly can. I just don’t know with what we’ve got for (this) week if we’re going to see an outstanding race like we have in the past on the old surface.’’

Sprint Cup teams also will receive all of their tires at the same time this weekend. They typically receive their practice and race tires separately. This is being done so teams can scuff their race sets during practice by running four or five laps on those tires.

Teams will be allowed six sets of tires for practice and qualifying and 10 sets for the race. Teams can carryover a set from practice to the race.
