First lightning threat, now rain delay Daytona practices

For the second time this afternoon, NASCAR practices are on hold — first because of lightning in the area and now due to heavy rain.

The first of two NASCAR Xfinity Series practices was red-flagged 26 minutes into the session when lightning was reported in the area. The session never resumed.

The first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice kicked off at 3:05 p.m. ET, just five minutes past its scheduled start time, but was also placed on hold due to a lightning threat less than 10 minutes later.

Rain then began to fall, wiping out the remainder of the session, which was scheduled to go until 3:55 p.m. ET.

The second Xfinity session is scheduled for 4 to 4:55 p.m. ET, but that’s likely in doubt due to the ongoing rain.

The second Sprint Cup NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice is slated to go from 5 to 5:55 p.m. ET.
