Bowyer's car caught fire on turn 8 during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma.

Clint Bowyer came into Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 Sprint Cup race at Sonoma Raceway having finished in the top 10 in eight of his last 10 starts.

Make that eight in the last 11 now as Bowyer made an early exit when his car suffered an apparent electrical fire or similar malfunction on Lap 7.

Bowyer slowed his car to a stop heading into Turn 8 when smoke suddenly began billowing out from under the dashboard of his No. 15 5-Hour Energy HScott Motorsports Chevrolet.

“It had to be the ignition or a wiring fire,” Bowyer told Fox Sports 1. “I’ve had oil smoke and stuff like that before in a car when blowing up, but I’ve never had an electrical fire.”

Bowyer then tried to put a bit of levity on the incident.

“Damn, it choked me out, I couldn’t breathe,” Bowyer said. “I bailed out and the damn thing started rolling, so I had to re-shift and put it in gear. It’s a great start to the day.”
