Kyle Larson and his team each were docked 15 points for a P3 penalty from a postrace inspection failure at Michigan International Speedway.
Interim crew chief Phil Surgen, normally the team’s lead engineer, also was fined $25,000 for the No. 42 Chevrolet failing to pass the laser inspection system platform after finishing third in the FireKeepers Casino 400.
Crew chief Chad Johnston, who was suspended at Michigan and on probation because of a lug nut violation at Pocono Raceway, wasn’t affected by the penalty.
The points deduction drops Larson from 19th to 21st in the points standings.
A Chip Ganassi Racing spokesman said the team wouldn’t be appealing and had no further comment.
The punishment is similar to the penalty issued to Kasey Kahne’s team for failing LIS inspection after the May 15 race at Dover International Speedway. Kahne and lost 15 points, and crew chief Keith Rodden was fined $25,000 for the P3 violation.
Rodden said in a Hendrick Motorsports release that the No. 5 Chevrolets truck arms were bent during the race. The team also didn’t appeal.
