The first caution of the GEICO 500 came out on Lap 50 after a multi-car crash that began when Dale Earnhardt Jr. got loose exiting Turn 2.

Earnhardt’s car swerved to the left, came back to the right and made contact with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne.

The No. 88 suffered severe damage to its left front.

Also collected in the accident was Matt DiBenedetto and Danica Patrick.

Earnhardt told Fox the accident was the “same thing” that happened to him in the Daytona 500 when he spun out of Turn 4 and hit the inside wall.

“I think trying to put the nose between the 19 (Carl Edwards) and 14 (Tony Stewart), there’s a lot of air coming off those cars and it just pinned the nose,” Earnhardt said. “We were really tight, the splitter was on the ground real bad the whole first run. We took some rounds out of the back and that made the car really too loose off the corner. Same thing we did in Daytona, we just got look at our adjustments a little bit different.”

Earnhardt would return to the race and be involved in another crash on Lap 110 when Carl Edwards blew a tire and shot up into Earnhardt, sending both into the wall.
