With very little fan fare, a massive power shift recently occurred among Sprint Cup drivers on Twitter.

Unfortunately, it didn’t involve Carl Edwards making his debut with a clever tweet about a Subway sandwich (we’re still waiting Carl).

Instead, Danica Patrick was dethroned as the driver with the most followers.

The twist? It’s not Dale Earnhardt Jr., the 13-time most popular driver who became the second NASCAR driver to reach 1 million followers last May.

With just over 1.91 million followers as of Wednesday morning, the new king of NASCAR Twitter is six-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

At some point in the nine months since last May, when he had the third most followers at just more than 773,000, Johnson sprinted passed Earnhardt and Patrick to the top spot.

Here’s the 10 Sprint Cup drivers with the most followers on Twitter as of Wednesday morning.

  1. Jimmie Johnson: 1.91 million
  2. Danica Patrick: 1.42 million
  3. Dale Earnhardt Jr: 1.37 million
  4. Kevin Harvick: 662,000 + followers
  5. Brad Keselowski: 651,000 + followers
  6. Kyle Busch: 619,000 + followers
  7. Kasey Kahne: 591,000 + followers
  8. Denny Hamlin: 510,000 + followers
  9. Tony Stewart: 433,000 + followers
  10. Clint Bowyer: 379,000 + followers

Seven of the 10 drivers are Chevrolet drivers compared to two for Toyota (Busch, Hamlin) and one for Ford (Keselowski). Among the 10 drivers are 12 Sprint Cup championships. Chase Elliott (197,000 + followers) is the only Hendrick Motorsports driver not in the top 10.
