Matt Kenseth’s run of misfortune has reached three consecutive races.

On Lap 225 of Sunday’s scheduled 267-lap Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kenseth was involved in a wreck heading into Turn 2.

Kenseth lost control and spun up the track. Chase Elliott had nowhere to go and slammed into the rear of Kenseth’s car.

“I really don’t know what happened,” Kenseth told Fox. “I just turned off in there and spun off before I honestly knew what was happening. I don’t know why it spun out. I tried to save it the best I could and just got hit hard from behind and ended up wrecking it.”

Added Elliott: “Just disappointing. What a fast race car. Just a terrible job on my behalf. It’s pitiful. Run three races and finished one. Bad job on my end. I know better to miss a wreck like that.”

Carl Edwards also was caught in the incident and appeared to have made slight contact with the Chevrolet of pole sitter Kurt Busch, but both cars continued.

Kenseth took his heavily damaged Toyota to the garage, as did Elliott with his Chevy.

Kenseth’s bad luck this season started when he lost the lead on the final lap of the Daytona 500 when his block of teammate Denny Hamlin failed and Kenseth finished 14th.

Then, last week at Atlanta, he was black flagged and didn’t come into the pits soon enough, eventually losing two laps and taking himself out of contention.

The race returned to green on Lap 232, with Kyle Busch in the lead.
