Sprint Cup conducting two open test sessions Thursday at Las Vegas

Casey Mears and Kyle Petty look ahead to this weekend's racing at Las Vegas and discuss what difficulties the track presents.

Ahead of the Sprint Cup Series’ Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, race teams will be part of two extended test sessions at the 1.5-mile track Thursday.

The sessions, which are open to fans, are for teams to get more on-track time with the new low-downforce package that was introduced last weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. A Goodyear tire test was conducted in January with Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski.

“The test session on Thursday is extremely important for us because it is the only time we will get to test anything until June at Kentucky Speedway because we don’t have any upcoming tire tests,” said Randall Burnett, crew chief for AJ Allmendinger in a team release. “It is important for us to hit on some big ticket items that we have questions and ideas about to get a direction for going forward.

The first session runs from noon to 2 p.m. ET and the second session follows from 3 to 6 p.m. ET.

Fans can enter the track through ticket gate C beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET. The track’s Neon garage will be open.
