Grammy-winning Soul Asylum to perform before Phoenix Sprint Cup race

Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum rock group Soul Asylum will give a free concert prior to the March 13 Good Sam 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway.

PIR officials announced Monday that the group will play in the Fan Midway area at 10:30 a.m. MST. The race is slated to take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. MST.

Admission to the concert is free for fans who possess a grandstand ticket for the Sprint Cup race. The band is performing to support its 11th album, “Change Of Fortune,” to debut on March 18,

Soul Asylum began in Minneapolis in 1981. Its original name was Loud Fast Rules, before switching to its current moniker. It achieved significant regional success early on before going nationwide.

Among its biggest albums have been Hang Time (1988), Grave Dancers Union (1992) and Let Your Dim Light Shine (1995).

One cut off Grave Dancers Union, “Runaway Train,” won the 1994 Grammy as Best Rock Song. Other big hits the band has had include “Black Gold” and “Misery.”
