Front Row Motorsports announced Wednesday morning that it will field a third entry for the Daytona 500 with David Gilliland as the driver.
He will pilot the No. 35 car. No sponsor has been announced. Front Row Motorsports has two charters and those will guarantee a starting spot for rookie Chris Buescher and Landon Cassill. Thus, Gilliland will be competing for one of the four open spots in the 40-car field that go to teams without charters.
Gilliland is eligible to compete for the Sprint Unlimited since he is a former Daytona 500 pole winner, but Front Row Motorsports will not field a car for him in that event NBC Sports has been told.
Gilliland drove for Front Row Motorsports from 2010 through last year. He finished third in the 2011 Daytona 500. Gilliland finished 32nd in the points last year for Front Row Motorsports with a best result of 11th in the Daytona 500. He has three finishes of 11th or better in seven Daytona 500 starts.
