NASCAR on NBC analyst Dale Jarrett says after talking with people at Stewart-Haas Racing, he believes the surgery performed on Tony Stewart this week could keep the three-time Sprint Cup champion out of the car for three months or more.

Stewart suffered a burst fracture in his L1 vertebra in an all-terrain accident Sunday in the sand dunes of Southern California. Stewart had surgery Wednesday in North Carolina. Stewart-Haas Racing announced Thursday that Stewart would miss the beginning of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season but did not state how many races that would be. The team also has not named a replacement for Stewart while he recovers.
