Stewart-Haas Racing continues to make improvements and additions for the 2016 season.

Among the organization’s latest moves is the hiring of veteran pit coach Walt Smith, a move confirmed to NASCAR Talk on Tuesday afternoon by team spokesman Mike Arning.

Arning said Smith joins Joe Piette and Kevin Sharpe in the SHR pit department, Arning said.

The pit department has helped lead SHR to earn consecutive Mechanix Wear MVP Pit Crew awards in 2014 (Kevin Harvick’s team) and 2015 (Kurt Busch’s team).

Smith has served with a number of teams over his lengthy career, including Hendrick Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt Inc., Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and, most recently, Michael Waltrip Racing.
