Friday’s Sprint Cup practice at Homestead is cut short by rain

Rain apparently has followed NASCAR east, from Phoenix to Miami, as Friday’s Sprint Cup practice at Homestead-Miami Speedway was cut short by rain. There will be two more practice sessions on Saturday, weather permitting.

Now the question is whether rain will impact today’s Sprint Cup qualifying session.

If weather rains out qualifying, set to take place this evening at 6:15 pm ET, then the starting field for Sunday’s season-ending and championship-deciding Ford EcoBoost 400 will be set based upon Friday’s practice speeds.

NASCAR was able to get in about 54 minutes of the scheduled 1 hour, 25 minute session before rain brought things to a halt 31 minutes early.

Carl Edwards was fastest at 175.143 mph, followed by Brad Keselowski (174.452 mph), Chase finalist Martin Truex Jr. (174.374), Phoenix winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. (173.689) and Texas winner Jimmie Johnson (173.678).

As for the other Chase finalists, Kevin Harvick was seventh-fastest at 173.550 mph, Kyle Busch was 16th fastest (172.177) and Jeff Gordon was 30th-fastest at 170.127. If qualifying is indeed washed out, Gordon will have his work cut out for him if he starts Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400 that far back in the pack.

The rain that impacted the Sprint Cup practice came and went fairly quickly, as the final Xfinity Series practice session began after just a short delay to dry the 1.5-mile race track.
