Veteran crew chief Ernie Cope, who has served as crew chief this season for defending Xfinity Series champ Chase Elliott, will leave JR Motorsports at season’s end.

Cope will assume a new role as Competition Director for JTG Daugherty Motorsports.

It will be Cope’s second tour working with JTGD majority owner Tad Geschickter, having done so previously in 2006 (with driver Stacey Compton) and 2007 (with Marcos Ambrose).

Cope, 46, has been a crew chief for the past 13 seasons and has amassed 15 wins in both the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series.

Cope’s pending departure was first reported by Motorsport.com.
