Phoenix clinching scenarios to advance to Chase championship round

chase for sprint cup logo

With Jeff Gordon having an automatic berth into the Championship 4 race, the other seven drivers remaining in the Chase for the Sprint Cup all face their biggest race of the season to date Sunday at Phoenix.

Other than Gordon, no one is guaranteed a spot in the championship round at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Here’s the scenarios to clinch one of the three remaining berths for the championship race:

* Kyle Busch will move on to the championship race with a finish of third or better at Phoenix; fourth and at least one lap led; or 5th and the most laps led.

* Kevin Harvick will clinch with a finish of second or better; third and at least one lap led; or fourth and most laps led.

* Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Joey Logano will assure advancement to the final round with a victory. With the exception of Logano, between one and three (depending on what happens to Harvick and Kyle Busch) of those drivers can potentially make the championship round on points, as well.

* Logano can only make it to the championship round by winning at Phoenix.
