Panel upholds Talladega penalties against No. 33 Truck Series team

With one minor change, the National Motorsports Appeals Panel on Tuesday reaffirmed the P4 level penalties levied on Oct. 28 to three members of the No. 33 GMS Racing team in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Crew chief Shane Huffman, driver Brandon Jones and Maurice Gallagher Jr., were all assessed penalties related to illegal brackets/supports found on Jones’ truck during post-race inspection after finishing second behind race winner Timothy Peters at Talladega Superspeedway two weeks ago.

Huffman was originally fined $10,000, and suspended for the next three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events, plus any non-championship races or special events which might occur during that period, as well as placed on probation for the next six months.

The Appeals Panel upheld Huffman’s penalties, but with one modification: he will remain on suspension only for the final two races of the season (Phoenix and Miami), rather than extending through the first race of the 2016 season at Daytona.

Per the Panel’s decision:

“The Panel finds that the suspension portion of the Penalty for the crew chief should not last beyond the current season in this special case because of the delay in the originally scheduled hearing. All other portions of the original Penalty as levied by NASCAR (e.g.; owner points; driver points; fine; probation) are affirmed and upheld.”

The loss of 25 championship driver points against Jones and 25 championship owner points against Gallagher Jr. were upheld by the Panel, which was made up of David Hall, Hunter Nickell and Kevin Whitaker.

Huffman, Jones and Gallagher retain the right to appeal the Panel’s decision to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer in accordance with Section 15 of the NASCAR Rule Book.
