GMS Racing to appeal NASCAR penalties from Talladega infractions

GMS Racing announced Thursday morning that it will appeal the penalties levied by NASCAR on Wednesday.

Director of Competition Mike Beam issued this statement: “As a stand-alone team in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS), we respect NASCAR’s efforts to maintain a level playing field for all teas and competitors.

“However, we feel that it is in the best interest of our organization, partners and team personnel to appeal NASCAR’s decision. GMS Racing will have no further public comment until the process is completed.”

Crew chief Shane Huffman was fined $10,000 and suspended for three Truck Series races for an infraction discovered during prequalifying inspection on Brandon Jones‘ No. 33 Chevrolet last Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Jones, who finished second in the Fred’s 250 the next day, also was docked 25 driver points, as was team owner Maurice Gallagher Jr. The penalty would drop Jones from 16th to 17th in the points standings.

NASCAR cited the team for violating the following rulebook sections:

  • 20.4.12.2 (triangular filler panels must be used on the left and right sides and conform to NASCAR drawings);
  • 20.20.a (NASCAR may, in its sole discretion, refuse to permit for any reason, or it may restrict or assign the size or placement of decals, identification, and advertising of any kind including but not limited to the vehicle, equipment, personnel, uniforms, garage and pit areas, promotional materials, and/or support vehicles);
  • 20.4.f (unless otherwise stated, all body attachment mounts and supports used to connect body components to the chassis must be constructed of non-adjustable, solid brackets or supports).

The penalty was classified as a P4 under section 12.5.3.4.b&d (parts which do not meet specifications;actions or omissions which might circumvent the Rules) and section 12.5.3.4.1d&f (approved parts that are not properly installed or are made adjustable when not normally intended to be (e.g.; Failure to maintain rear spoiler angle, other than due to crash damage, at non-speedway Events).
