John Hunter Nemechek was the surprise front-runner in Friday’s first of two practice sessions for the Camping World Truck Series at Talladega Superspeedway.
The 18-year-old Nemechek was fastest with a speed of 191.608 mph around NASCAR’s largest superspeedway (2.66 miles), just barely ahead of second-fastest John Wes Townley (191.604 mph).
Third-fastest was Timothy Peters (191.528), followed by Truck Series points leader Erik Jones (190.189) and Ben Kennedy (188.947).
No. 2 in the standings and two-time defending Truck champ Matt Crafton was sixth-fastest (188.745), while No. 3-ranked Tyler Reddick was eighth-fastest (188.052).
