GMS Racing announced Thursday that Johnny Sauter will drive for the team next year in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
The 37-year-old Sauter has been with ThorSport Racing since 2009. He’s fourth in the standings, 51 points behind Erik Jones with five races left this season. Sauter has placed fourth in the points each of the past two seasons.
Sauter, who has 10 career Truck series wins, joins Spencer Gallagher at GMS Racing next season.
GMS Racing team owner Maurice Gallagher views Sauter’s arrival as a significant move for the team, which made its series debut in 2013.
“We’ve worked extremely hard to put great people in the right places at GMS Racing, and adding Johnny Sauter to our lineup is a monumental step in that process,’' Gallagher said in a statement from the team. “Johnny has proven himself to be a perennial contender at this level, and we’re confident he’ll help elevate GMS Racing into a championship contending program.”
Sauter also will reunite with Chevrolet in his move to GMS Racing.
“This opportunity to race with GMS Racing in 2016 is incredible,” Sauter said in a team release. “They’ve quickly built an impressive, race-winning organization in a short period of time and have only gotten stronger as the season has progressed. I can’t wait for Speedweeks at Daytona to get working with everyone, and am excited to rejoin the Chevrolet family as well.”
