Tony Gibson, crew chief for Kurt Busch, could miss time this weekend while recovering from surgery Tuesday for an emergency appendectomy but is expected to call the race.

Stewart-Haas Racing spokesman Mike Arning said Gibson plans to be at New Hampshire Motor Speedway “as soon as he’s able. That could be as early as Friday morning or as late as Saturday afternoon.”

Engineer John Klausmeier will serve as interim crew chief for Busch while Gibson is sidelined. SHR vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli, who won two championships as the longtime crew chief for Tony Stewart, also will have an increased presence with the No. 41 Chevrolet.

Klausmeier also filled in as interim crew chief in the April race at Bristol Motor Speedway while Gibson was recovering from a bout with kidney stones.

Busch and Gibson qualified for the Chase this season with two victories (Richmond1 and Michigan1) and are ranked fifth in the standings after finishing third in the playoff opener at Chicagoland.
