JOLIET, Ill. – Kyle Busch held off a hard charge by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth to win Saturday’s Furious 7 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
Kenseth briefly got past Busch with one lap left, but Busch roared right back to regain the lead and take the checkered flag for the 74th time in Xfinity Series competition.
“It was tough, that was a race,” Busch said. “I thought it was a blast. I’m glad it was a teammate. That was some fun racing.”
There’s no question Busch and Kenseth had the best cars in the field, as Busch led 102 laps of the 200-lap event, while Kenseth led 84 laps.
“We had the fastest car, but Kyle did the better job,” Kenseth said.
About an hour after the race, NASCAR officials announced that Busch’s car was found to be too low. Any penalties will likely come early next week.
Darrell Wallace Jr. finished third, followed by Paul Menard, Ty Dillon, Daniel Suarez, Xfinity points leader Chris Buescher, Elliott Sadler, Regan Smith and Brendan Gaughan.
Chase Elliott, who was hoping to close in even more on Buescher in the standings, finished 14th.

How Busch won: With one lap to go, Busch had an issue with a lapped car, allowing Kenseth to roar past on the inside. But Busch came right back and Kenseth could not catch him on the final lap. Kenseth may have had a slightly better car, but Busch was the best when he needed it the most, winning by .791 seconds.
Who else had a good race: Helping his bid to win Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. finished an Xfinity career-best third, even though he ran out of gas on the final lap. He had enough momentum to be able to coast through the final two turns to the finish line. … Ty Dillon kept the pressure on points leader in their battle for No. 1 in the standings. Dillon finished fifth, while Buescher finished seventh.
Who had a bad race: Ryan Blaney was running third when he cut a tire on Lap 22, bringing out a caution flag. Then on Lap 103, he pancaked the wall after sustaining heavy damage to the right side of his car after apparently cutting another tire. Blaney finished 35th. … Landon Cassill blew an engine and finished 33rd. … Kyle Larson was strong early on, but ran out of fuel and finished 22nd, one lap behind the leaders.
Notable: Saturday marked the 12th race of a stretch of 16 consecutive race weekends for the Xfinity Series drivers. … Brian Scott hoped the 201st start of his Xfinity Series career would lead to his first win in the series. Scott had a strong car early, but fell back to finish 17th. … Only 12 drivers finished on the lead lap.
Quote of the day: Sprint Cup regulars “Matt and Kyle really don’t count, so we actually won tonight.” – Third-place finisher Darrell Wallace Jr., on his career-best finish in the Xfinity Series.
