RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond International Raceway has submitted an ask to move its annual Sprint Cup race in the spring from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.
RIR president Dennis Bickmeier confirmed the request Friday to Motorsport.com, which cited unnamed sources in reporting that the move will become official next season.
“Now, we’re just going through their process,” Bickmeier told Motorsport.com. “We’ll see what comes out on the other end.”
NASCAR Talk first reported in May that International Speedway Corp., the parent company of RIR,. was considering a move for the event. In April, the Richmond race was postponed to Sunday afternoon by rain but drew a solid TV rating that was encouraging, according to Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell (who also oversees RIR).
NASCAR is expected to release its 2016 schedules within the next few weeks.
