Jim Massey, the first person not related to the Wood Brothers to drive for the team in NASCAR, died Aug. 21.
Massey first drove for the Wood Brothers in 1957 at Martinsville Speedway, finishing second. Bob Wellborn won that race. Massey finished ahead of NASCAR Hall of Famers Lee Petty, Rex White, Joe Weatherly, Fireball Roberts, Glen Wood, Buck Baker and Cotton Owens that day.
He also placed second at Martinsville in 1960 for the Wood Brothers. He finished behind NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty that day. Massey finished ahead of eight drivers in the 37-car field who would go on to the NASCAR Hall of Fame: Wood, White, Lee Petty, Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, Weatherly, Fred Lorenzen, Baker,
Massey drove 51 career races in NASCAR’s top series, including nine with the Wood Brothers.
