Michigan International Speedway will have added safety initiatives for this weekend’s Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series events.
Track president Roger Curtis announced Monday the new initiatives, following a review of the facility by International Speedway Corporation and NASCAR officials.
Per a track media release:Approximately 150 feet of temporary wall will be added to the existing pit road tri-oval wall, extending toward Turn 4. Attenuators will be placed at the end of the extension on the wall.
Additionally, safety enhancements announced in April have been completed including the addition of 700 linear feet of Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) to pit in and pit out walls, and the installation of tire pack barriers at the angled wall inside Turn 1. The infield at the exit of pit road was also paved to function as a skid pad and pace car vehicle entry and exit.
Upon the conclusion of the August NASCAR weekend and installed in time for the 2016 racing season, Michigan International Speedway will again work with Cheaha Construction for the addition of 7,500 linear feet of SAFER to outside walls on the frontstretch and backstretch, as well as the pit tri-oval wall.
