Denny Hamlin honoring Cale Yarborough with Southern 500 paint scheme

Hamlin

Denny Hamlin has joined the ranks of drivers who will be sporting retro themed paint schemes for the Sept. 6 Southern 500 Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway.

Joe Gibbs Racing has revealed that Hamlin’s No. 11 Sports Cuts Toyota will have a paint scheme inspired by those used by Cale Yarborough in the 1970’s.

This isn’t the first time Hamlin has honored Yarborough, who had 83 career Sprint Cup wins and five at Darlington. Hamlin’s fire suit and paint job for the 2012 race at Darlington was dedicated to Yarborough’s NASCAR Hall of Fame induction.

Hamlin will take the tribute one step further with his Xfinity Series car also getting a retro look for the Sept. 5 VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200, which airs on NBC.

Hamlin’s retro Darlington paint job joins those of Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart.
