NASCAR officials in the control tower will take over responsibility of turning on the pit entrance light, NASCAR.com reported Sunday.

The move begins with today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Sonoma Raceway. It will be effective for Cup, Xfinity and the Camping World Truck Series.

The move comes a week after 19 Xfinity drivers were penalized at Chicagoland Speedway for pitting too soon. The confusion came when it was announced on the NASCAR radio channel - which teams monitor - that pit road was open, but the official at the entrance of pit road did not turn the green light on or wave the green flag, signifying that pit road was open.

NASCAR.com reported that if a green light is displayed at the entrance of pit road, but a series official is there waving a red flag, then pit road is closed. Teams must abide by the official waving the flag.
