Saturday’s Toyota/SaveMart 350 Sprint Cup qualifying session at Sonoma Raceway will have a special message behind it.

The track has partnered with the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to sponsor “Drive for Safety Pole Day.”

According to a statement in a media release announcing the partnership, “NHTSA is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in motor vehicle and highway safety and works daily to help prevent crashes and their attendant costs, both human and financial.

“NHTSA recommends keeping your tires properly inflated for safety and fuel efficiency, as well as important tire maintenance like rotation, balance and alignment to help your tires last longer. Remember the 5 ‘PARTS’ TO DRIVE -- Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, Tread, and Size.”

Added NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind, “Our partnership with NASCAR will help us reach thousands of fans with a simple message: Safe driving practices can help keep you and your family safe. You don’t need to be a NASCAR crew chief to check that your tires are at the correct pressure and for wear or damage.”

Sponsoring Pole Day is just one of several initiatives that the NHTSA will offer throughout the 2015 NASCAR season, with additional programs highlighting things such as distracted driving, seat belts, tire safety and five-star crash ratings.
