What off-weekend? Landon Cassill racing in Canada on Sunday

Landon Cassill will compete in a Ironman competition Sunday near Montreal.

Landon Cassill will be racing Sunday.

Wait a minute, the Sprint Cup Series is off this weekend, the Trucks raced Friday at Iowa and the Xfinity Series races Saturday night at Chicagoland.

What kind of race would Cassill be in up north of the border?

That’s a trick question, my friends, as Cassill will definitely be racing -- but he’ll be doing it on two legs rather than four wheels.

Cassill, along with Blake Haugland, rear tire carrier for David Ragan’s team at Michael Waltrip Racing, will both prove their mettle of sorts in an Ironman competition, the Ironman Mont Tremblant 70.3 in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.

This will be Haugland’s first race of 2015 and he’ll be competing for Smile Train’s Team Empower, which is an international charity to help children with a cleft lip and palate.

Haugland hopes to raise enough money through fundraising efforts to provide surgery for 70 children to match the 70-mile race.

A dedicated long-distance runner, Cassill recently ran the length of just over a half-marathon after last month’s Coca-Cola 600, running 14 miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in downtown Charlotte.
